Lucca, a Tuscan jewel protected by ancient walls

Lucca is the capital of Tuscany and is a charming medieval city, very well preserved.

The symbol of the city are the imposing sixteenth-century walls, which are still completely intact today. 12 meters high and 4 kilometers long, they are characterized by a beautiful tree-lined avenue where you can play sports, stroll, attend events or enjoy the view over the city. Taking a walk around the walls is in fact a good way to spend time in the greenery and from them you can also admire the beauty of Lucca 's urban structure. In addition, you will have the opportunity to rent a rickshaw to get around all the walls that surround the city in a fun and faster way.

But entering inside the walls you will be struck by this small city, full of historical and cultural monuments. Let's start from the Roman Amphitheater, today Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, the work of the architect Lorenzo Nottolini, characterized by a round shape which today houses typical restaurants. Another treasure not to be missed is certainly the Cathedral of San Martino, its Romanesque façade striking for its asymmetry: one arch of the portico is smaller due to the pre-existing bell tower. On the pillar close to the bell tower is the fascinating sculpture of the labyrinth, a symbol linked to the theme of pilgrimage, as Lucca it is located along the Via Francigena.

Walking through the streets of the city you will then discover the Basilica of San Frediano, with its stupendous facade, and yet the square and the splendid church of San Michele. In the middle of the historic center you will also come across towers. At the top of the Guinigi Tower, open to the public, you can see a garden complete with trees and from up there you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the whole territory of the plain.
